These negative moods continue to tempt alcoholics to return to drinking long after physical withdrawal symptoms have abated. Alcohol affects the nervous system and can result in nerve damage and severe memory loss. Chronic alcohol use also increases the risk of cancer of the larynx, esophagus, liver, and colon. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects. Usually an alcoholic will experience alcohol withdrawal 6 to 8 hours after cutting down or stopping alcohol consumption.
