Emergence of a Superstar

By:

I mean, this was just the craziest idea I ever heard of. Doyle had dealt me in all right. I was his selection to collaborate on the limit hold ‘em section. That, in itself, was flattering, since I’d only recently polished my game to where I was happy with it. Here was Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, the man who had won the last two world titles saying he considered me the best limit hold ‘em player in the world.

How his charm would work on those other superstars he wanted for collaborators, I had no way of knowing. But his charm had worked on me. Two days later I called him up and said, “Well, when do we start?”

Now, that was probably the dumbest thing I ever did.

“It will just take a few days,” he told me. “About twenty hours of taped interview and then you can go back to your cherished life as a touring poker player.” I’ve never heard him sound so effervescent. His optimism splashed over to me.

Then we got started. Well, I’ll tell you, it didn’t just take two days. I worked on it for a year solid, and so did Doyle and all the other collaborators.

I mean, we just got obsessed with it. You just can’t imagine.., six grown-up professional gamblers huddling sometimes till dawn to put strategies together. So many gamblers are also in australia in the poker. Giving away secrets. Consulting mathematicians. Refining and distilling until we were all so proud of the book we couldn’t wait for it to hit the market.

And so it was a year later that we had this incredible argument in the offices of the company Doyle had started, called B & G Publishing.

“You can’t sell it for a thousand dollars a copy, Doyle,” I pleaded. “No one will buy it.”

“Well, Bobby, when they hear what’s in it—”

“Doyle, we all worked hard on this. We’ve got to find the price that will be most reasonable for sales.”

“You saying it aren’t worth a thousand dollars? We’ve put over six hundred pages into it. It took us a year. In fact, it took me longer than that. And I’ve got a half million dollars invested in it!”

“You’ll end up selling only about five hundred of them, all to professional players.”
“Well, I’d rather burn the book than sell it for less than five hundred dollars,” said Doyle in one of his rare stubborn moods.

A week later, though, after talking it over with numerous advisers, Doyle phoned me up and said, “We’re going to sell it for $100.” He didn’t sound too pleased about it.
But all I could say was, “Thank God!” I knew that the longest, toughest year of my life was not going to waste.

During that year, I did manage to spend two or three nights a week at poker. But instead of traveling, I played mostly in Las Vegas. It was a good year for Bobby Baldwin. So good that by the time the World Series of Poker came around again in May, 1978, I had my biggest bankroll ever. It grew to nearly $800,000. But three weeks before the tournament, I played a thirty-two hour session at the Dunes. It cost me $100,000, and when I drove away from the casino, I was feeling tired and irritable.
